DualDisc Pentetration
Continues to Grow, Reaching 2% of Sales
Tuesday, August 16, 2005
Since the introduction of the DualDisc format
during the Q4 last year, the penetration has
so far reached 2% of overall CD sales. DualDisc
is a hybrid CD/DVD, where the CD side contains
standard Redbook audio and the DVD side contains
DVD-Audio/Video content such as high definition
surround sound audio tracks and/or music videos.
According to report put together by the request
of the National Association of Recording Merchandisers,
around a quarter of recent music shoppers are
aware of Dual Disc and ~3/4 of those who purchased
a DualDisc expects to purchase another. 60%
of those familiar with the format expect to
purchase one or more DualDiscs within the coming
six months.
DualDisc, that hybrid disc technology which
integrates music and video features, has made
some market penetration, accounting for about
two percent of total CD sales since being introduced
in last year's fourth quarter. This is according
to a recent report prepared by research firm
NPD.
The report, which was put together at the request
of the National Association of Recording Merchandisers,
showed that more than a quarter of recent music
buyers were aware of the format. Of those, nearly
60 percent said they expected to buy at least
one DualDisc in the next six months.
As DualDiscs contain at least music videos or
high definition tracks on the reverse side,
they are more likely to grab the consumer attention.
However, there may be some consumers who may
see the word "DualDisc", assume it's a totally
different type of disc that requires a special
player or worry about it not working with their
equipment and end up avoiding it!
